Witham Operatic Society and Guys and Dolls: or Lisa takes a bath and Robbo’s past resurfaces.

Recently we received an e-mail asking if we’d take photos of Witham Operatic Society performing Guys and dolls. This was to take place in the full dress rehearsal and the week leading up to it. Jackie, Robbo, Lisa and I stepped up to the plate. We thought it would be a good idea to see some of the early rehearsals so that the actors would get used to us, and we would get to know the outline of the show and who were the leads. I still have the tune “Luck be a Lady Tonight” running through my head but I can’t quite remember the words. Unfortunately Lisa couldn’t make the first night, something about getting ready for a bath on Thursday???  Now, I have been stood down for many reasons in my life, hair washing, homework, good show on TV, but getting ready for a bath was a first – we now know it was worth it.

The shots taken at the rehearsal gave some indication of the lighting problems we would face. We identified the leading actors as rehearsals moved to the final venue. The day of the dress rehearsals came and Robbo was complimented on some of his earlier shots by an acquaintance from his past – no secrets were revealed. Jackie and Robbo got some good shots as I tried some off camera flash but it didn’t quite work, some of the trigger batteries were dead. (Note to self: before flashing charge batteries)

Guys and Dolls, Minus The Guys

Guys and Dolls, Minus The Guys

Like us, Witham Operatic Society is run by enthusiasts. Robbo posted the shots online and WOS will pick the shots they like. For this service they will contribute as they think fit towards our chosen charity. From an e-mail I received they like our output and want us to perform the same service for their next production Kiss Me Kate which commences this week.

What’s Another Year?

Our 5th Annual AGM (the hint is in the title) and Awards Night:

Each year we have evolved as a club, from simply presenting the AGM as an extended committee meeting to an all-singing-all-dancing AGM/Awards and DVD extravaganza.

The review of the year showed; we have purchased a laptop computer and software, projector, Colormunki, basic DSLR camera and screen.  We obtained external Grassroots funding of £3500 that covered the major part of our purchases, the remainder coming from club funds. Our membership has risen in the last 12 months from about 36 active members to 74 members plus 4 junior members

We now have continued the twice-monthly meetings, the second meeting usually being workshops and these are gaining in popularity.  Resulting from the increase in numbers we have had to move to larger premises and this resulted in the evening we meet being changed to a Thursday.

We also provide pictures to Mount Chambers Surgery that we intend to change every 4 months or so.  We have also raised £52.50 for the Alzheimer’s Research Trust and support for this organisation will continue for the next year.

All Committee Members were returned to their posts unopposed and most stood and justified their existence to the attendees.  Club fees were kept at last year’s levels and the constitution was agreed.

The Awards Ceremony was compared by MikeT and the results were:

Winner Entry Level – John Parish

Wine and nibbles were demolished and I think it is an indication of the increasing numbers and implied requirement to drink to get through the AGM that the wine barely made it to the end of the Awards Ceremony and we’ll need much more next year.  Here’s to another vintage year for the club, Onward and Upward!

Thanks go to Cas Spicer for taking the photos, she didn’t have much to work with!

A Photographer’s Salutary Tale.

For any club member, the Colin’s tale below will ring true to a certain degree.  Take heart, you are not alone:

Tonight I have been doing a little soul searching or is it a belated new year’s resolution?
I realised that I have taken only one image with my camera since Christmas Eve when I saw my daughter, and took some “snaps” of our new grandson including a couple of images of 4 generations from my wife’s family’s perspective. My mother-in-law was more than pleased with the prints but to me they were just “snaps”.  As Mr Turnbull said, however, that if the client likes the image that is what is important.

Looking For Inspiration

Since Christmas to coin Austin Powers I seem to have lost my mojo.

I’m even struggling to achieve at least one idea for this month’s competition.   So yesterday I decided I had better finish watching the episodes of the BBC DVD ‘The Genius of Photography’ that I hadn’t already watched which I had borrowed before Christmas (sorry if anyone has been waiting to borrow it).
There are some stunning images shown, there are very thought provoking and extremely disturbing images to be viewed. And then again there are those that look just downright insignificant and ordinary that make you wonder why the heck the photographer bothered.  Then there were the explanations and views about the philosophies of individual photographers, artists and critics being explained. What their motivation was, what drove them, what drives them still, even to start using old outdated techniques from the 1850′s instead of the modern digital age.

Timing Is Everything

Watching the entire series has, in part, made me feel somewhat inadequate especially when I look at the images of the masters. However, it has also illustrated the tremendous power of the camera and that everyone who picks it up sees a different image and that most, if not all, genres have now gained more than a degree of acceptance. Therefore there appears to be no right or wrong.

On the other hand it has made me feel that I need to re-evaluate my own reason for using a camera. What is it that I’m trying achieve, what type of image do I want to take? What is or should my style be. Questions I’m not sure I can or even know how to answer at this moment even after so many years of “playing” with the camera.

I know I feel that I need to push myself out of a rut of safeness and start to set myself challenges. Only in that way will I begin to see beyond what I have always understood, that the camera does so very well, which is to record whatever is within the range of the lens, the lighting and the sensitivity of either the film or the sensor when the shutter is activated, regardless of whether it was wanted or intended. It is a fantastic tool for recording any given moment in time, inanimate object, animal or mineral placed in front of it.

The Devil Is In The Detail

Where do I go from here, well to bed firstly otherwise the proper job will suffer in the morning, but I’ll take pen and paper just in case sleep won’t come but inspiration does. However if you’ve managed to survive with me to the end of this (can I thank you for your patience and stamina) maybe you might have the odd suggestion to aid my journey through the coming year of exploration.

Epilogue:  Now on the positive side Colin feels his mojo returning and the 365 project less daunting than he did.  It is a serious undertaking and I have nothing but respect to those that can find inspiration on a daily basis, where mine only works weekly, or less.  All the images in this article are Colin’s – check out his Photostream.

GNPC On The Podium Again

GNPC Place Second Overall in UK Camera Club Challenge

The Advanced Photographer Club Competition awards ceremony was another where GNPC was one of the front runners for the title.  There were nine rounds clubs could enter throughout  the year with GNPC winning the first round and going straight into the final.  As Clacton won two rounds there were only eight clubs present at the ceremony held at Epson’s HQ in Hemel Hempstead.

The GNPC sent a delegation of the not-so-great-or-good and the day started with a buffet (that I was first in line for!), then an interesting talk on Black and White processing that had Mark Edwards scribbling notes for his talk next week.  Afterwards there was a presentation on printing and colour representation that was very technical with a few handy hints for us but in the main aimed at clubs that print rather than project.

Finally it came down to the judging and it has to be said the panel of three judges (all FRPSs) worked very well.  The decision to print out the images onto A4 for judging was curious as the audience struggled to see (except us, we were at the front, and Robbo had a better view than the judges) and the interpretation of some of the categories was open to question.  As usual Mark Edward’s did very well and my own Heron in Flight pic held it’s own in tough company.

GNPC's Top Three Images The final standings were:

1 DAPA Group 277 pts
2 Great Notley PC 260pts
3 Conwy CC 258pts
4 POTN SE UK 254pts
5 = Newton Abbot PC 248pts
5 = Parkwood CC 248pts
7 Halstead & District PS 246pts
8 Clacton CC 234pts

DAPA won with images that have been tested in competition many times before.  I think it behoves us to strive to produce better images for next year, with more members contributing and the results from the GNPC themed and open competitions so far would suggest we are on target to do that.  Every club went home with Epson paper, Epson mug and a free copy of Advanced Photographer!!  Many thanks go to Epson for hosting and Advanced Photographer for organising.

GNPC Reach the Final of the Camera Club Championship

The club’s selection committee is swinging into action again for the final round of the Advanced Photographer’s Camera Club Championship 2012.  Having won the first round of the competition the club went straight through to the finals.  The images for the final are being chosen this week, some of which may be on the thread here.

By David Robbo Roberts

It is testament to the talent and dedication of the club members and committee that we seem to be able to produce a number of high quality images in all categories.  Here’s hoping that in the next few months we are celebrating more national club success.

GNPC Members’ Images on BBC Winterwatch Christmas Special

Sat reclining, Homer Simpson style, after all the Christmas feasting most of us would find ourselves in front of the TV on Boxing Day.  I was shaken from my post postprandial slumber when Winterwatch displayed TWO images from GNPC club members on their Christmas Special.

Peter Warne’s image of the Avocets below got a special mention (and he got name checked), so kudos to him:

John Parish’s shot of deer in Wethersfield was picked out (and not criticised) by Chris Packham, so plaudits to him too:

For those of an inquisitive nature the images appear 1hour 20 mins into the programme, which you can check out on iPlayer for the next couple of weeks.  Winterwatch-link.

Photography Rocks

Rock Stars Wanted - Dead or Alive

Rock Stars Wanted - Dead or Alive

This shot was taken at Madison Square Garden, New York in February this year. I had treated my partner, Diane, for her 40th birthday and booked a backstage tour, dinner with the crew and ‘pit’ tickets. We were three rows from the front and on the centre aisle, so had the best vantage point to get plenty of shots all evening with an unobstructed view. The shot was taken during “Wanted Dead or Alive” when Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora take centre stage at the beginning and end of the song.

At the end of their 2010/11 tour in July, Bon Jovi announced their “2010 & 2011 Tour Photo” contest. The international competition was open to anyone who had been to their gigs within the timeframe. Only one image was allowed per entry and I think this was my strongest image from the evening. A congratulatory email came through to confirm it had come in 2nd place and  I had to sign a release form so it can be used for any publication. To say we were ecstatic is an understatement!

The winning images were posted on to the Bon Jovi website and also on their Facebook site. At midnight on the day the results were posted the picture had received 2,426 ‘likes’, which was 606 more than the winning image, and hundreds more than 3rd and 4th place. It also received numerous comments asking who the photographer was and if they could buy it!

I can safely say that a lot of elements brought together make this picture a personal favourite for me. Having a reliable, good quality bridge camera (Canon G12), excellent viewpoint and location, and obviously good subject matter! Winning 2nd place and receiving recognition has made an unforgettable trip even more memorable. But part of the success is purely down to right place, right time!

Hot Off The Press

GNPC stalwart, John Parish, has got himself a four-page spread in the current issue of Essex Life.  This showcases John’s talents for taken engaging local images that dovetails perfectly with the magazine’s outlook.  The article includes ten images taken by John and includes a piece outlining how he feels about, and approaches, his photography.

John Parish Essex Life Spread Dec 2011

Earlier in the year the entire club put forward Essex-related images for an article in the magazine, but this is the first time a single member has been showcased.  Well done John.
